Barbara Bento - Head of Tax Investigations and Dispute Resolution

"Clients come to us with varying problems, needs and expectations. Using my technical expertise, intricate knowledge of HMRC, together with my mediation and people skills, I help my clients resolve their tax investigations and disputes."

Barbara joined Buzzacott in 2018 and is the Head of our Tax Investigations and Dispute Resolution team.

She has a proven track record in successfully resolving complex voluntary disclosures and tax investigations, such as Code of Practice 9 and HMRC cross-tax enquiries, challenging incorrect and unfair HMRC tax/penalty assessments, quickly and cost effectively, while securing beneficial settlement terms for her clients with HMRC.

Barbara understands the needs and concerns of her clients, ensuring those with tax exposure are treated fairly and proportionately with the aim of minimising unnecessary tax, interest, and penalties.

Barbara is a fully accredited CEDR Mediator, internationally recognised as the standard of excellence in mediator qualifications. As a CEDR accredited mediator, Barbara advises on using mediation as a method of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to resolve long-standing tax disputes and negotiating Time to Pay arrangements with HMRC. She has acted as a co-mediator alongside HMRC’s appointed mediator to ensure clients are given a fair chance in ADR to resolve disputes without the need for litigation.

She is qualified by the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT), which is the leading professional body for those providing UK tax compliance services and by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which is the global body for professional accountants.

Outside of the office, Barbara enjoys her acting classes and travelling, especially to Portugal, her native country.

Barbara and I worked together to assist a mutual client in reducing a customs duty and import VAT liability from nearly £4m to £1.7m. Barbara’s assistance was invaluable, as HMRC had previously doggedly defended the full liability. She provided valued input by collating and advising on the best position to pursue at Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Barbara and Mark Taylor from the Buzzacott team liaised with HMRC’s ADR Team, which ultimately led to a fair, just, and excellent result, especially given HMRC’s previous refusal to engage.

Barbara and her colleagues were very personable and easy to understand in terms of approach with myself and the client. Equally, they were very professional and stood for no-nonsense when presenting and advancing the client’s case with HMRC.
