Understanding your results
The calculator provides an indication of potential savings based on the information you’ve entered.
If the results suggest potential savings, the next step is to consider how this could apply to your business. This involves reviewing your current tipping arrangements, confirming which payments qualify, and ensuring the scheme is structured in line with HMRC expectations.
Thinking of implementing an independent tronc scheme?
Many hospitality businesses operate tipping arrangements without realising that not all tronc schemes qualify for National Insurance savings.
A tronc scheme is a way of distributing tips, gratuities and service charges to staff. When it is set up and operated correctly, and an independent troncmaster is appointed, qualifying payments can be paid without employer National Insurance contributions. In many cases, employees may also benefit from National Insurance savings.
However, for these savings to apply, the tronc must be genuinely independent from the employer and operated transparently. If the employer retains control over how tips are allocated or paid, the arrangement may not meet HMRC requirements, even if it is referred to as a tronc.
This means businesses that already have a scheme in place may still benefit from a review to confirm whether it is structured correctly and delivering the intended savings.
