Akin Coker, Private Client Partner and Team Lead, was recently quoted in Spear’s, sharing his views on HMRC’s recent crackdown on incorrectly paid Inheritance Tax (IHT).
In the article, Akin highlights the growing importance of seeking expert estate planning advice, particularly as recent changes to IHT means that pensions will fall within scope from April 2027, reversing much of the previous advice that individuals may have been given. The long-standing suggestion to leave pension pots untouched and draw on other assets to minimise an IHT bill is no longer necessarily the most suitable option. Many will now consider accessing their pension savings earlier and gifting these to children, however this approach will not be right for everyone, and seeking tailored expert advice is key.
