Socrates has more than 28 years’ experience in the profession advising on a wide range of VAT issues but specialises in the charity and not-for-profit sector including educational bodies, welfare/NHS charities, membership organisations, housing associations and cultural organisations such as theatres and museums. He has experience in advising on property and construction projects, negotiating VAT recovery methods and undertaking VAT reviews which encompass liability issues and the application of the zero rate reliefs. He also has experience of the Alternative Dispute Resolution process and has provided support to clients in preparing for VAT tribunal appeals.
Socrates is a member of the Charity Finance Group and Charity Tax Group and regularly presents seminars at charity conferences and local ACCA meetings. He is an avid speaker and writes and delivers bespoke VAT training courses for his clients.
Prior to joining Buzzacott, Socrates ran his own VAT consultancy practice for 15 years and before joining the profession in 1990, Socrates worked for HM Customs and Excise both as a VAT Inspector and Excise Officer.
Outside of Buzzacott, Socrates enjoys watching football, playing chess or backgammon and taking time out with his family.
