Working from home to get ahead

Working from home will, for some, take a little adjustment. However, this practice can bring advantages that not only improve your current output but allow you to invest in your own development.

Following government advice, many of us are now working from home for the foreseeable future. It might take a little adjusting to, however, there are some positive aspects of this practice, as summarised below:

  • No commute. How long does it normally take to commute to and from work each day? What can you productively do with this additional time afforded to you?
  • Space to think. For some, the opportunity to work from home may well mean that they reduce their exposure to potential distractions they would otherwise encounter at work, increasing the quality of their thinking space.
  • Approach to thinking. Taking people physically out of their everyday working environment can alter the way they think about problems and challenges that arise in their work, for the better. It’s a well-known coaching technique used both in business and elite sport.

Staff training

This shouldn’t need to be affected by this current situation. Virtual classrooms are effective forums to hold interactive bite-sized training sessions and coaching via either the telephone or online. Organisations are also seeing the sense in supporting their staffs’ personal development to help maintain their focus, morale and competitive edge. Leaders appreciate the opportunity to use a coach as an independent sounding board, particularly if they are in ‘crisis management mode’. An experienced coach will be trained to create the space for them to think, help review their actions and plan ahead. Team members appreciate the opportunity to reflect upon their performance and start working on the areas they need to develop to move to the next level.
