James Kirman - Senior Manager

“‘The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax’ – Albert Einstein. I enjoy the intellectual challenge of getting to grips with two tax systems and the interaction between them. Tax law is continuously changing so I'm constantly learning."

James joined Buzzacott in 2013 and is a Senior Manager in our Expatriate Tax Services team.

James works to understand his clients’ obligations as taxpayers in an ever-changing, increasingly complex and harsh regulatory environment. He works with a wide range of people with US tax exposure, mainly long-term UK resident American citizens who have settled in the UK. He also works with a large number of US resident Americans who have returned home but retain strong ties to the UK, as well as UK citizens now resident in the US.

James specialises in the US and UK taxation of private equity investment managers, pre-US and UK arrival and departure planning, UK deemed domiciled individuals, US expatriation and US non-filers. He manages his clients’ cross-border taxation, particularly organising their usually complicated tax affairs to limit the impact of double taxation.

He frequently works with our Financial Planning team to provide tax efficient pension and investment planning for his clients with US and UK tax exposure, and also with our Private Client team to navigate the complexities around the structuring and taxation of Excluded Property Trusts for his UK resident non-UK domiciled clients.

James is a qualified Tax Technician (ATT), Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and Enrolled Agent (EA). He has a first-class degree in Politics from the University of Nottingham. Prior to joining Buzzacott he worked in agriculture.

Away from his desk, James follows his sports teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Lincoln City, spending too much time brooding about their frequent losses. He also keeps in touch with his rural roots, enjoying clay pigeon shooting, country fairs, hiking, frequenting village pubs and seeking out a bargain on the latest Barbour jacket.
